The government has admitted that the major constraint in the cement sector is reliable and cheap energy as well as poor infrastructure that hinder the development of cement manufacturing industry in the country. It has been learnt.
Speaking to invited guests at the Tanzania Portland Cement Company Limited (TPCC) Twiga Cement headquarters on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Dr Abdallah Kigoda said that one of the major constraints in the Tanzania competitive platform has been on how to ensure reliable energy to manufacturing industries.
‘the government is working hard to ensure reliable power that meet the current demand by increasing production and generation of megawatt while strengthening transmission channels and expansion of supply domestic and industrial use,” he said.
Dr Kigoda noted that Tanzania has become an investment destination for potential investors from all over the world that is why the government is working hard to ensure there is peace and stability across the country.
“Cement industry has recorded a steady progress year in year which has benefited the stakeholders and the public in general,” he added.
He said that another bottleneck is the distribution cost, which results from poor roads, traffic jam, lack of railway wagons and locomotive power.
On his part, Twiga Cement Managing Director Pascal Lesoinne said that Twiga Cement Plus is a new product entering into the country’s complex environment.
“After a lot of research and bouncy roads the experts from our production and sales departments, in their continuous fight for improvements of our products, have now been able to find a next development for Twiga Cement, Twiga Plus,’
“Yes the Twiga brand products have always been strong but now it is getting stronger reaching to new heights. With TPCC being the market leader and the first cement producer in Tanzania only proves that yes we want what is best for the people of Tanzania by investing more and producing quality products. Twiga Plus, a new cement of class 42.5 will upbeat all the competition and prove to be the strongest cement in the market,’ he said.
He said that in today’s complex market, a lot of cement from various imported brands is entering into the Tanzanian market but the firm has no fear to compete with them on fair grounds.
Lesoinne added that it is difficult to swallow the current market competition when you realize that some importers are not playing and applying the same rules of the game in the existing Tanzanian market.
He further explained that importers who are betraying the rules of the game are hurting their operations but also depriving the government substantial revenues and demising the quality of the product in the market.
“I’m also grateful to Dr Kigoda to have listened to our call and setting up the team of experts that is now visiting the cement producers in Tanzania. I’m sure that these experts will come to the only straight conclusion that Tanzania does not need to receive sub-standard products wherever they come from,’ he added.
Lesoinne said the construction industry is Tanzania is booming in terms of new buildings, rehabilitation of the city infrastructure while making the Tanzania skyline new features.
